If you are an individual student registering yourself, click on the “Register Myself” option. All exams you are eligible to register for based on your exam history should show up. If the exam you wish to register for is not available and you believe this to be an error, please contact registrar@alu-web.com.

Group Registration

To reduce the time and effort required for company Educational Representatives who wish to enroll two or more students in ALU examinations being administered at a single company site, the Academy offers a multi-student registration option.

If you choose to coordinate exam registration for a group of students, click on the “Register Someone Else” option. A screen will pop up where you can either select an existing student to register or add a new student to register. Please note that you will only be able to select existing students that belong to the same company location as you. If there is an existing student who you wish to register that does not come up as an option, please contact registrar@alu-web.com.

Once you have selected an existing student or selected to add a new student, please either verify their existing information or enter all required information, and then click “Save & Close”. All exams that the student is eligible to register for based on their exam history should show up. If the exam the student wishes to register for is not available and you believe this to be an error, please contact registrar@alu-web.com.

Important Changes to ALU Exams Starting April 2025:  Whether you are a new or returning student, you will want to make note of some changes we have made in response to feedback from our students:

  • The Anatomy and Physiology (A&P) book is no longer required curriculum for our exams. While not required nor tested, this remains an excellent resource for underwriters.
  • Exams with a score of 70 and above will pass (students with a score below 70 will not pass).
  • After Exams are scored, letters will be sent to all students that provide a numerical breakdown of how many questions were answered correctly and number of questions tested by chapter.

Exam Cancellation:

ALU exam registrations may be cancelled upon request by sending an email to registrar@alu-web.com. Requests for cancellation received within 24 hours of registering will not be subject to an administrative fee. Students may cancel their exam registration by February 1 for April exams or by August 1 for October exams and will receive a full refund minus a $100.00 US administrative fee.

There will be no refunds for cancellations after February 1 for April exams or after August 1 for October exams, unless there are extenuating circumstances preventing a student from taking an exam, such as a medical or family emergency. If you believe you meet the criteria for consideration of a late cancellation, please send an email to registrar@alu-web.com detailing your circumstances, and it will be reviewed by the ALU Executive staff. If a student’s exam registration is approved for deferral due to extenuating circumstances, the deferral will only be honored for the next available exam sitting, after which time the registration will be forfeited. It is the policy of the Academy of Life Underwriting that once a student is registered for an exam, the registration belongs to the student, even if they are registered by a company representative. In the event that a student leaves their employer after being registered for an exam, the registration still belongs to the student, and may not be transferred to another student.

Credit Card Disputes:

If a credit card charge for a student’s exam registration is disputed for any reason, the exam registration will be cancelled. If the student wishes to register for another ALU exam in the future, they may be liable to pay any chargeback fees that were assessed to the ALU as a result of the disputed charge.

Effective June 1, 2024 the ALU will no longer be able to reissue refunds for 2020 exam cancellations.

ALU Marketing Material:

Students' names may be used in ALU marketing materials, such as congratulatory posts on LinkedIn or published in OTR.

Exam Technology Requirements:

It is each student’s responsibility to read the provided instructions for the exam including technology requirements and how to complete a system check in advance of their exam. If a student discovers any technology issues that may affect their ability to complete their exam, they should notify the ALU immediately by sending an email to registrar@alu-web.com. Failure to follow exam instructions and notify the ALU at least two weeks prior to the exam may result in the inability to complete the exam and the student will not be entitled to a refund.

System Requirements

Starting with the April 2023 exams, the ALU will be utilizing a new online proctoring service called Rosalyn.

In order for students to take an ALU exam, they must be able to download the Rosalyn desktop application. Please ensure well ahead of time that you will be able to download the application to your computer. Some companies may block this download. If this is the case, please either contact your company’s IT department today to allow it or make arrangements to use a personal computer.

Rosalyn is installed as a desktop application for MacOS or Windows - it is NOT a browser extension. Candidates will be guided to download this application before they start their exam and instructions will be provided to them as a part of this process.

Special Accommodations Policy:

The Academy of Life Underwriting (ALU) is dedicated to complying with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), including providing reasonable accommodations for students with disabilities who sit for our exams. We hold to the definition of disability as defined by the ADA: a person with a disability as a person who has a physical or mental impairment that substantially limits one or more major life activity.

If a student wishes to request an accommodation, we require the following documentation.

  • Completed Accommodations Request Form.
  • Signed documentation from the medical provider or institution who diagnosed the condition and/or from whom the student currently sees for treatment verifying the disability and noting recommended accommodations.

This documentation should be sent to registrar@alu-web.com. If requesting an accommodation, students should wait until after receiving a response to the request to register for the exam.

Please allow up to 10 business days for review. All requests should be received at least 30 calendar days prior to the registration deadline. If a student wishes to register without a late fee, the request should be received at least 15 business days before the late-fee deadline to ensure enough time for review.

All requests, reviews, and accommodations will be kept confidential and only reviewed by the pertinent parties within ALU.

If you have any questions about our policies or review process, please reach out to us at 202-495-3134 or registrar@alu-web.com.
